R744 Heat-Recovery Pinch & UA Review

Look inside the CO₂ heat-recovery exchanger—not just at its endpoints. Segment the nonlinear transcritical R744 cooling path against the counterflow secondary fluid, find the true minimum temperature approach, and calculate aggregate UA only when the full profile remains feasible.

WHEN TO USE THIS TOOL

Useful during reference & conversion work.

  • Resolve unit-system differences quickly across calculations, drawings, schedules and vendor data.
  • Look up common formulas, constants and engineering reminders without leaving the HVACR workspace.
  • Reduce repeated manual conversion work while keeping the final engineering review with the user.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this different from checking only inlet/outlet approach?

Transcritical CO₂ temperature does not change linearly with heat rejection. An internal minimum approach can be smaller than both endpoint approaches, so this tool reconstructs the R744 temperature profile from enthalpy at fixed pressure.

Does the UA result select a heat exchanger?

No. It is a segmented ideal-counterflow thermal conductance requirement. Real exchanger selection also needs geometry, pressure drop, fouling, maldistribution, materials, pressure-system design and manufacturer validation.

Where does the U-value come from?

Only from you. HVACR Studio supplies no default overall heat-transfer coefficient. If you enter U, area is simply UA divided by that entered U-value.

What happens if the temperature profiles cross?

The tool flags the entered terminal program as thermally infeasible for the ideal counterflow model and withholds UA and area rather than producing a misleading number.
